MAJA (맞아) Meaning — How Koreans Say "EXACTLY!" | SingSay Korean

How Koreans say
“Exactly!” before
you finish.
Two friends are talking.
One says exactly what the other was thinking.
The answer comes before the sentence ends.
What does ‘맞아’ mean?
‘맞아’ (Maja) means “That’s Right!”, “Exactly!” or “I Agree!”
It comes from the verb ‘맞다’ (Matda), which has two meanings at once.
Like a key fits a lock, or a shirt fits your shoulders.
Both senses are alive in ‘맞아’.
Two jobs, one word
English needs two different phrases for what ‘맞아’ does.
Someone gives the right answer.
Someone says what you were thinking.
The second one is what you will hear most.
In conversation, ‘맞아’ is less about facts and more about being on the same side.
say it
The ‘아’ at the end is a short, open “Ah.”
Ma-ja, not May-ja.
When Koreans say it
Notice the doubled one. ‘맞아 맞아’ is not a typo.
Saying it twice turns agreement into excitement: “Yes, Yes, Exactly.”
Level it up
‘맞아’ agrees. These two agree with a little more personality.
‘그렇지’ often comes when someone finally lands
on the point you were waiting for.
‘딱’ is the little click of something snapping into place.
A jacket that fits, a song that suits the moment, a plan that works out.
It is agreement about fit, not about facts.
네?
This trips up almost every learner.
‘네’ (Ne) means “Yes.” It answers a question.
‘맞아’ means “That’s Right.” It confirms a statement.
Using ‘네’ there is not wrong.
But ‘맞아’ is what a friend would actually say.
The polite versions
‘맞아’ is casual: friends, classmates, people your own age.
Friends, Classmates
Teachers, Older People
Customers, Interviews
Same agreement, three levels of distance.
Lyrics
When someone gets it right, say:
맞아! 맞아! 맞아!
When someone gets it right, say: maja!BRIDGE
The food is delicious? 그렇지!
Everything is just right? 딱이야!
Say it all together: 맞아! 그렇지! 딱이야!
The bridge walks through all three in order.
A fact, a nod, a perfect fit.
Words in this song
Four songs in, you can doubt the news with ‘진짜?’,
celebrate it with ‘대박’, sigh at it with ‘아이고’, and now agree with it.
