LESSON
OMG!
TODAY’S WORD
헐~
Heol
Say covering her mouth in shock

How Koreans say
“OMG” with
one syllable.

A friend tells you something so unexpected
that a full sentence feels like too much.
So you say one sound, and everyone knows.

ASTUNNED
헐
OMG, Wait, What?
BNO WAY
말도 안 돼
That’s Impossible
CPOLITE
세상에
Oh My Goodness
01

What does ‘헐’ mean?

‘헐’ (Heol) means “OMG!”, “No Way!” or “Wait, What?”

It has no dictionary meaning. It is a pure reaction sound:
the Korean version of your jaw dropping.

Where it
came from

‘헐’ spread through online chat in the 2000s, then moved into everyday speech.

Today you hear it constantly in variety shows, dramas and group chats.

It covers every kind of shock: good news, bad news, weird news.
What it always carries is disbelief, a second of being stunned.

If ‘진짜?’ asks whether something is true,
‘헐’ is what comes out when you know it is, and still cannot believe it.

02

Short or long?

How long you hold it matters.

SHORT
헐.
Heol · Flat, Stunned
LONG
헐~~
Heol~~ · Dramatic, Theatrical

Both are normal.
The longer the ‘헐’, the bigger the shock.

03

When Koreans say it

YOUR FAVORITE STAR JUST WALKED IN
헐~
Heol~
THE PRICE IS IMPOSSIBLY LOW
말도 안 돼!
Maldo An Dwae!
A FRIEND TELLS YOU SHOCKING GOSSIP
헐, 진짜?
Heol, Jinjja?
SOMETHING MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL
헐… 말도 안 돼
Heol… Maldo An Dwae

Notice how often ‘헐’ comes first. It is the reflex; the real reaction follows.
‘헐, 진짜?’ is one of the most natural two-word combos in spoken Korean.

04

Level it up: ‘말도 안 돼’

‘헐’ is the sound of shock. ‘말도 안 돼’ (Maldo An Dwae) is the sentence version.
You are saying the thing should not even be possible.

= It doesn’t even work as words

English says “That’s Ridiculous.”
Korean says the idea cannot even be put into a sentence.
It works for things that are impossibly good, and impossibly unfair.

헐 or
대박?

Both react to surprise, in different directions.

‘대박’ is impressed: the news is big and usually good.
‘헐’ is stunned: hard to believe, good or bad.

대박!
THEY QUIT THE NEXT DAY
헐…
05

A note on tone

‘헐’ is very casual and quite young. Totally fine with friends and people your age.
But it began as internet slang, so some older Koreans still hear it as a little childish.

Really?

With teachers, bosses and grandparents, reach for ‘세상에’.
You met it in the ‘아이고’ lesson.

‘말도 안 돼’ is casual too. The polite version is ‘말도 안 돼요’ (Maldo An Dwaeyo).

Lyrics

CHORUS
헐~ (헐~) 헐~ (헐~)
When you are shocked, you say:
헐~ 헐~ 헐~
heol~ heol~
When you are shocked, you say: heol~
BRIDGE
Your favorite star is here? 헐~
The price is that low? 말도 안 돼!
Something just blew your mind? 헐~ 말도 안 돼!
Say it all together: 헐~ 헐~ 말도 안 돼!!
heol~ · maldo an dwae! · heol~ maldo an dwae! · heol~ heol~ maldo an dwae!!

This one is an 80s synth-pop track, and it is meant to be over the top.
Say ‘헐’ like you are in a music video.
The more dramatic, the more Korean it sounds.
